Latex and foil balloons float with 4.6 just as with balloon gas – handy when one cylinder serves the workshop and the shop window.

Helium 4.6 in the workshop
In TIG welding helium raises the arc voltage: more heat goes into the workpiece, so thick aluminium and copper weld faster and with deeper penetration, often with less preheating. Use it pure or blended with argon; because helium is so light, the flow rate is usually set higher than for pure argon.
For leak testing helium is the ideal tracer gas: inert, non-flammable and present in air at only about 5 ppm, so a mass-spectrometer or sniffer leak detector finds even the smallest leak in refrigeration circuits, heat exchangers, vacuum chambers and gas lines. Grade 4.6 (≥ 99.996 %) gives a clean, stable signal at a lower price than 5.0.
