Helium grades
- Helium 4.0 (≥ 99.99 %) – balloons, leak detection and shielding gas.
- Helium 4.6 (≥ 99.996 %) and 5.0 (≥ 99.999 %) – welding, laboratories and analysers.
Pure helium, or helium added to argon, gives a hotter arc and deeper penetration when welding aluminium and copper. As a tracer gas it finds leaks in refrigeration, vacuum and pressure systems; laboratories use it as carrier gas for gas chromatography.
