For balloons, helium 4.0 is enough
Helium 5.0 in the laboratory
Helium is the classic carrier gas of gas chromatography: light and inert, it gives fast separations with good efficiency over a wide flow range and works with FID, TCD and mass-spectrometer detectors. Grade 5.0 (≥ 99.999 %, at most 10 ppm of other gases) is the usual grade for routine GC and GC-MS; for trace analysis, add a carrier-gas purifier after the regulator.
Beyond chromatography, helium 5.0 serves as zero, purge and calibration balance gas for analysers, as an inert atmosphere for sensitive samples and for helium leak detection where a low background matters. Use a two-stage regulator with a stainless-steel diaphragm on the W21.8 × 1/14" valve (DIN 477 No. 6) and purge the line before measuring.
